Adeline was the typical school geek. She wore these old fashioned glasses, drab clothing, and while her friends were blossoming into mature beautiful young girls that began to attract bees right left centre, she still wore dorky undershirts and was forever staring at the mirror wishing that she had a little more shape on her body.

At the age of 15, she was still wearing ‘kids’ undergarments while her classmates were getting boyfriends and already wearing adult undergarments, some even starting to put on make-up and also strutting around in mini-skirts. Groups were beginning to form between the kids, the jocks, the geeks, the popular and cool, and also the brainy kids. She seemed to fall into the geek category, and she felt lonely because most of her classmates taunted her about her appearance and because of her reserved nature, she ‘shut’ herself out.

She had a good friend, Rebecca, who was hot and popular, and every guy in school seemed to be hitting on her. No one understood why these two girls were inseparable, for one was like a bright shining star, the other was probably the star that had lost its light, if she was even considered to be a ‘star’ Adeline grimaced at the thought. She had a crush on this popular guy, Vincent, and he was the captain of the basketball team, and also the best runner of the track team. All the girls were crazy about him, but everyone knew he had eyes for Rebecca. Rebecca was the leader of the cheerleader team, and she was also brainy. Everyone thought that these two were the perfect match, but because Rebecca knew Adeline liked Vincent, she never tried to hit or go out with Vincent. Adeline knew that fact, and was glad that Rebecca was such a loyal friend to her. “You should just be yourself,” Rebecca always tried to encourage her. It did not change the fact that Adeline had a serious crush on Vincent, and her face turned red every time Vincent glanced their way, although deep inside she knew he was looking at Rebecca. Her heart skipped a beat every single time he walked past, and she wrote his name all over her note book. She could only think about his crinkle blue eyes that seemed to sparkle every time he grinned mischievously, and the way he ruffled his golden hair took her breath away. His dimples made him look even cuter, and she found herself sighing just like most of the other girls in class.

One day however, she decided to make a move. She wrote a love letter to him, and she planned to sneak into the boys’ locker room and put in into his locker. Just as she was about to sneak into the locker room, she heard Rebecca’s voice floating out of the room, stopping her dead in her tracks. Rebecca sounded a little breathless. “You’re so hot…” Vincent’s voice sounded breathless too. Adeline’s face paled as she slowly sneaked a peek into the room, dreading the worst. She saw them kissing passionately, and the letter from her hand slipped and fell on the floor, and she ran away as fast as she could, hot tears streaming down her face. How could she? She’s my best friend!! How could she? She could have told me she liked him too!!  The words kept ringing over and over her head, and she felt that the last ray of hope had vanished into the air, feeling the heaviness of despair weighing down on top of her.

The very next day, Rebecca confronted her with a letter in her hand. “Did you write this?” She asked her quietly. “Yes.” Adeline looked at the ground, kicking an imaginary stone. Suddenly the heat boiled up and overwhelmed her. “You betrayed me. I don’t want to be friends with you anymore,” She screamed in Rebecca’s face, tearing the letter into shreds and throwing them in her face. She turned and saw Vincent’s face filled with guilt. “I’m sorry…” He began. Adeline didn’t wait for anyone else to finish their sentence when she broke into a run, and didn’t stop until she was back home upstairs in her room, tears gushing down her face uncontrollably. All of a sudden, she stood up and screamed. “That’s the last straw!! I want a makeover!! I will show them!!”

Unfortunately, most of her friends, including Rebecca and Vincent never got to see her ‘makeover’, because her whole family moved to another city three days later, for her father was shifted by the company to another branch in another city. Adeline grew stronger, and she made new friends, who liked her for her personality and character, not her looks, and she felt much happier too. Even though she moved to another city, she never forgot her vow to makeover. Her friends helped her out, and in less than 2 years, she became one of the hottest and most popular girl in her new school.

It had been three years since the incident had happened, and there was a volleyball competition between schools. It was held by the beach, and she was selected to compete against Greenfield High School, her old secondary school. Heart thumping in her chest, she walked out onto the battlefield, wondering which old school mate would be competing against her. To her amazement, it was actually Vincent and another girl she had never seen before. Apparently he didn’t recognize her. It was a close match, but Vincent and his playmate won the first round. However, because Adeline wanted a little bit of revenge, she decided to play a little ‘dirty’ trick. When they were resting before the second round, she walked up to him in her bikini and hollered at him. “Hey, Vincent… I haven’t seen you in a long time. How are you?” Vincent looked at her blankly and replied, “Do I know you? I would have remembered a hot babe like you if I met one…” Adeline snorted when she heard the remark, and smiled at him with a look of satisfaction on her face. “I’m Adeline Wesley, don’t you remember me?” Looking at his shocked expression while she stalked away with her head high was pretty much satisfying.

Nevertheless, Adeline and her volleyball team mate won the second round quite easily, and the final round too, simply because Vincent seemed to miss every ball headed his way, and was also trying to avoid that devilish smile on Adeline’s face. Even when they shook hands with their opponents, Vincent’s smile was forced and painful. Adeline however, gave him another one of her devilish smiles and stalked off again, her hazel brown hair blowing gently in the air.

They never met again after that. However, Adeline became more mature and realized that if it wasn’t for the incident three years ago, she would have been the same dork in a new school without a stronger personality, and things would have been exactly the same. She was grateful for what had actually happened since it helped her grow up, and to her it was also an unforgettable yet valuable experience.
